so fresh and so clean

Natural Makeup Brush Cleaner

Cleaning makeup brushes is one of those things that many people overlook as a necessity. I’ve heard from many women that they kept breaking out despite eating well and staying clean and weren’t sure why, until they discovered it was from using dirty makeup brushes!

Makeup brushes harbor much more than just used makeup, they collect bacteria and oil from your skin and dust from the room they sit in. This combo when left to sit uncleaned for periods of time creates a bacterial breeding ground and each use just adds to it.

There are many makeup brush cleaner options on the market but most of them contain toxic chemicals or preservatives. It may be obvious that a lot of mainstream cleaners are toxic but really they are in almost everything, including makeup and makeup brush cleaners!

Here is a makeup brush cleaner that is easy to make and non-toxic! I would recommend cleaning your brushes at least once a week. If you use them every single day then twice a week would be even better!

This makeup brush cleaner recipe contains no preservatives and will last long enough to use the entire mixture up before it spoils if you are cleaning your brushes regularly. If you want to double the recipe to make a bigger batch that will last longer then I would recommend storing the solution in your refrigerator or a beauty refrigerator if you have one!

DIY Natural Makeup Brush Cleaner

Ingredients:

Witch Hazel (1/2 cup)

Distilled Water (1 cup)

Castile Soap (1 tablespoon)

Olive Oil (1 tablespoon)

Tea Tree Essential Oil (7 drops)

Instructions:

Mix all ingredients into a mason jar and shake well!

To use, pour a small amount of the mixture in a small bowl and twirl brushes in the solution, then rinse with water and lay on a washcloth to dry.

Another option is to pour a batch into a spray bottle and spray your brushes thoroughly, twirl on a brush cleaning mat, then rinse off with water and lay to dry!

There is also a quicker more convenient makeup brush cleaner option that can be used for that session and discarded (if you don’t feel like making a batch and storing it etc). It’s only 2 ingredients (plus EO if you choose but not a necessity).

1 cup water

1 tsp Thieves Household Cleaner (my favorite natural cleaner concentrate that I use for all the things!)

2 drops tea tree oil

If you already have Thieves on hand this is a great easy method. If you don’t have Thieves already and want some – grab it here!
